Transmission Pan Install

All modifications are done at owners own risk.

This write up was performed using our '98 Tahoe as a guinea pig. Previous to this installation we have already installed a transmission temperature gauge and auxiliary transmission cooler to our 4L60E. The addition of this transmission pan was to give us more fluid to dissipate heat into (+3 quarts approx.). Although there was not as notable change in fluid temperature as adding the B&M cooler, the transmission's temperature does not fluctuate as quickly and actually seems to cool down quicker after a hard pull. Worried about ground clearance? The pan did not hang any lower than the crossover pipe on the exhaust it would take an awful lot to damage it.

The Parts: Summit Racing 4L60E Aluminum Transmission Pan w/ Logo.

The pan came with everything you need to install it (excluding tools), plus filter spacers to place the filter down near the pan floor. Another great feature on this pan is the addition of a drain plug to assist in fluid changes and fins to help dissipate the heat into the air. It is an attractive (if you can call it that), heavy duty pan and very well made with a machined gasket surface... Price wise the Summit pan was very competitive compared to other pans from other performance oriented companies.

Tools Needed: Socket to remove the old transmission bolts, Large catch pan, 12 point socket for new transmission bolts, Allen socket to install the plug.

This install was super easy so I will not bore readers with step by step pictures. The pan is also supplied with very good instructions from Summit.

Remove Stock Pan
  1. Slowly starting at one end remove the pan bolts so one end drops. Be sure to catch the fluid in a pan or you will have a huge mess.
  2. After draining the fluid and setting it and the pan aside. I inspected the old pan and fluid for particles etc.
Space the Filter
  1. Pull the old filter off the transmission (this is a good time to install a new one if needed).
  2. Install the spacer as per the instructions- 2 are included, only one is the proper size for the 4L60E.
  3. Install the spring clip and the new filter.
Install New Pan
  1. Put the gasket on the new pan and insert 4 bolts to hold it in place.
  2. Place the pan on the transmission and start the 4 bolts you used to hold the gasket on.
  3. Start the rest of the bolts making sure the gasket is correctly in place.
  4. Torque to specs.
  5. Install drain plug- I used a little teflon tape to keep the plug from welding itself in place and also to help seal against leaks.
  6. Using a funnel in the fluid level dipstick tube, put the recommended amount of fluid as per owners manual then add slowly 3 more quarts until you reach the proper fluid level on the dipstick. Remember to check the fluid level with the transmission running in Park on a level surface. Be sure to cycle your transmission shifter to help remove air from the system. After test driving make sure to double check the fluid level.
