Locker Install

Pre installation - Please secure the vehicle- Put blocks in front of front tires, loosen the lug nuts on rear wheels, and jack the vehicle up as high as you can get it. Place jack stands under frame so that the axles can droop down. Remove the rear wheels.

Vehicle installed in: '95 Jeep Wrangler
Locker: Lock-Rite P/N 2311s2

108-0861_IMG.jpg (52013 bytes) Drain the Lube and Remove the Differential cover.
108-0865_IMG.jpg (37182 bytes) Use a 1/4" - 12 point wrench to remove the pinion shaft retaining bolt.
108-0866_IMG.jpg (40547 bytes) Slide out the pinion shaft.
108-0867_IMG.jpg (41947 bytes) Remove the spider gears that should now be loose.
108-0868_IMG.jpg (24506 bytes) The gold colored part in the pic is a C-clip, that will need to be removed on each side.
108-0869_IMG.jpg (47216 bytes) Remove the brake drums so you can slide the axles in far enough to remove the C-clips and then slide it out far enough to remove the side gears.
108-0870_IMG.jpg (49041 bytes) Here is a pic of the C-clips and cone washers for the spider gears. You will not re-use the cone washers, but there will be a thin washer between each side gear and the carrier that you will need to re-install.
108-0871_IMG.jpg (41543 bytes) Here the axle is pulled out far enough to remove all the gears.
108-0873_IMG.jpg (41742 bytes) Pull axle out until the splined end is flush to the  bearing inside carrier.
108-0875_IMG.jpg (42551 bytes) Locker laid out the way it will go together. you are basically working from the sides into the center. Already installed on each outer half is the inner half of the coupler. It will only fit on one way, also installed- although incorrectly are the shear pins. We found out later in the install they need to be in the bigger, deeper holes so they are out of the way when trying to slide the second  side together. This is also a good time to grease everything up so it sticks together as you put it in the carrier.
108-0876_IMG.jpg (46034 bytes) Slide the axle in far enough to get the first piece of the locker on and slide the C-clip back on the shaft. Then pull the axle shaft back out to hold the C-clip in place.
108-0877_IMG.jpg (44132 bytes) Install the second half of the locker and the inner coupler. The inner coupler should slide all the way in and over the C-clip. This is what keeps it from falling out.
Now you basically do the same thing to the other side except you leave the C-clip out until you get the second half and inner coupler in the carrier. The C-clip will be put in through the slot that is in the second half of the locker. You may have to slide the inner coupler out of the way to get the clip back in the groove. Then slide the inner coupler back over it like on the other half.
You can now slide the shear pins across into the small hole in the other side of the locker. as you slide each pin across. Install the double set of springs behind it through each big hole in the side of the locker.
108-0878_IMG.jpg (44982 bytes) Install the pinion shaft included in the kit and re-install the pinion shaft retaining bolt.
108-0879_IMG.jpg (50750 bytes) The locker is now installed. Everything should now be locked up and your axles should turn the same direction.
evanslocker1.jpg (74834 bytes) Time to seal the diff back up with RTV sealant or a new gasket.  Re-fill with gear lube and put your wheels back on.
